I’m so glad you’re here. I grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina—the son of two singers and voice teachers. My mother was a soprano, and my father a baritone. They met in graduate school at the University of Michigan in the 1950s, and my father later returned to complete his DMA in the 1960s. Together, they taught at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, before finally landing at Converse College in South Carolina, where they remained from 1966 until their retirement 29 years later. My father also taught voice and sang leading baritone roles at The Brevard Music Center from 1966 to 1982.
During those years, I had the incredible privilege of hearing some of the greatest voices of the century pass through Brevard—Marilyn Horne, Samuel Ramey, James McCracken, Renata Scotto, Gianna Rolandi, Robert Merrill, Victoria de Los Angeles, Cornell MacNeil, Beverly Sills, Anna Moffo… just to name a few. I absorbed so much simply by watching and listening.
But the biggest influence in my musical life was the long conversations I had with my father. He had studied with some of the finest technicians of his generation, like Andrew White. We’d talk about everything—from the male passaggio to how to help a young singer “turn over” into his head voice or top voice. (I prefer the term “turn over,” though he was old-school and always used “cover.”) From him, I learned expert breath control and support.
My mother, meanwhile, worked closely with me as I pursued a solo career as a boy soprano. She taught me the importance of pure vowels and “placement”—a feeling of forward resonance in the mask. Over time, I’ve evolved that concept in my own teaching, seeing placement as something broader than just “forward.”
While I’ve worked with young singers in masterclasses throughout my performing career, I only began teaching privately in 2015. Over the past year, my studio has grown steadily—entirely through word of mouth. Today, I’m proud to have students singing in major opera houses across the world, including Opera San José, Los Angeles Opera, San Francisco Opera, Dutch National Opera, English National Opera, Opera Australia, Dresden Opera, Salzburg Festival, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Metropolitan Opera, and many more.
And just to dispel a common misconception—yes, I’m a countertenor, but I teach all voice types. My passion is helping every singer find their own healthy, individual sound, no matter their fach.
Thanks for visiting. I look forward to sharing more with you soon!
